You want to know the absolute truth, the universal equalizer? Matt already said it, so I'll just recap: Pain. Everyone has it in one way or another. As he said, everyone has one event in their life that defines them as who they are. For me, it was probably my parents' getting divorced. Since then I have known who I was and who I wasn't, and who I didn't want to be.
If you haven't had such an event in your life, trust me, it's coming. It will come out of nowhere, and it will be greater than you have ever imagined.
Now, this isn't to say "just shut down and give up, because your life is going to go to hell anyway". Quite the opposite, in fact. Pain is there to teach us something, it's the universe's way of telling us we screwed up somewhere. The way to learn from it is to push ahead, to embrace it and to move on. This sounds simple, but I assure you that it is not. It is difficult, but once you have done it, you will be a much better person for it. When we as a species learn that pain is growth, that death is necessary, and that cooperation doesn't always work out, we will be much better off than we are now.
